During the summers of 2022 and 2023, I completed two intensive four-week training courses in metalworking at Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig, Germany. Additionally, I took the Engineering Processes course at RPI in spring 2024, further expanding my technical expertise. I believe that mastering metalworking skills will be an invaluable asset to my engineering education, providing hands-on experience that complements theoretical learning. Specifically, I gained proficiency in the following areas:
- Reading schematic drawings
- Measuring and marking positions using calipers, pin gauges, and digital marking gauges
- Meeting tolerances of few hundredths of a millimeter
- Material properties of steel and brass, cutting speeds, and cooling requirements
- Manual processing with files, reams, thread cutters, sheet shears, press brake
- Machine tooling with drill press, lathe and mill
- Connecting parts with rivets, pins, and flame-brazing
- Surface-finishing with sand blasting, burnishing, and nickel-plating
- Maintenance of tools, including sharpening milling and drilling bits
